Compatibility made simple with Matter

Google Home works with Matter, the universal smart home standard that helps devices from different brands work together, making them easier to set up, and more responsive and reliable.

Matter requires a hub

Matter hubs for Google Home

You need a Matter hub inside your home to set up, control, and automate Matter devices while you're away. Since some Matter devices use either Matter or Thread to connect to each other, you will need a hub that supports Wi-Fi, Thread, or both.

Frequently
asked questions

What is Matter and how is it different from existing technology?

Matter is the universal smart home standard designed to make devices from different brands work together. Most smart home technology today only works with devices from the same brand. Matter changes that. Hundreds of manufacturers, including Google, have committed to supporting it. That means more compatibility, more choice, and a simpler smart home.

Why do I need a device that works as a Matter hub for Google Home to get started with Matter?

Your Matter devices need a way to communicate with Google Home. A Google device like the Nest Hub (2nd gen) or Nest Mini makes that connection. Once it's set up, you're in control from anywhere.1 See all compatible hubs.

Will I need to re-purchase all my smart home devices?

No. Your existing “Works with Google Home” devices are still fully supported. Some manufacturers may even update their current devices to support Matter over time. Whether a device uses Matter or “Works with Google Home”, everything works the same way. Just look for either badge when shopping for new devices.

Which types of smart home devices are supported by Matter?

Currently, Google Home supports the following Matter device types, with additional device types becoming available in the future as the Matter standard continues to expand: Lighting and Electrical: Smart light bulbs, switches, dimmers, and plugs. HVAC and Climate: Thermostats, HVAC controllers, and fan controllers. Safety and Security: Door locks, garage door controllers, smoke detectors, and CO alarms. Window Coverings: Smart blinds, shades, and curtains. Media Devices: Smart TVs and media streaming devices. Sensors: Temperature sensors, contact sensors, and motion sensors. Controllers and Bridges: Matter-certified hubs and bridges that allow non-Matter devices (like Zigbee or Z-Wave) to work within a Matter smart home ecosystem.
